Risk Matrix Calculator
Find the risk parameter that actually fits your strategy — not just the rule of thumb everyone repeats.
Why This Tool Exists
Most of us traders have been fed a rule-of-thumb risk value — 1%, 2%, "less than 1%" — and have followed it blindly without ever questioning the logic behind it.
Every trader runs a different strategy, and different strategies naturally produce different win rates and risk-to-reward ratios. It follows that our risk parameters should differ too — yet in practice, they rarely do.
This tool was built to help you calculate your own risk parameter, based on the rules below.
Calculation Rules
This calculator was built around a specific set of goals:
- Each row's Losing Streak length starts at the minimum your Win Rate implies — round(1 / Win Rate) — and increases by one loss per row down the table. For example, at a 25% win rate, the first row assumes a 4-trade losing streak (round(1 / 0.25) = 4), the second row 5, and so on.
- For each row, the risk % per trade is solved so that surviving that row's own Losing Streak, back to back, lands exactly on your chosen Max Dent Rule (adjustable from 1% to 50%, default 10%) — so you can see how much risk per trade a given streak length can absorb.
- Determine whether your win rate, combined with your average risk-to-reward ratio, is actually profitable over the long run.
- Fee Factor is the percentage of your risk amount paid out in fees. For example, a $10 risk with a 10% fee factor means an average fee of $1 per trade.
Why does the Max Dent Rule matter? It's based on the idea that the smaller a hit your portfolio takes in a really bad week or month, the easier it is to recover and get back into profit — set the ceiling to the maximum hit you're personally comfortable taking.
How to Use This Calculator
Match the sliders below to your own trading stats to see whether your win rate and average risk-to-reward ratio hold up in the long run.
Slide the win rate until the ending balance turns profitable — that point is roughly the minimum win rate your strategy needs at its current risk-to-reward ratio.
Set the Max Dent Rule to the maximum drawdown you're personally willing to stomach — every row's Risk / Trade is solved to match it, so scan down the Losing Streak column to see how many consecutive losses that risk level can absorb before your Max Dollar Risk Ceiling starts capping it further.

A personal note: think of this as your own personal risk calculator, tuned to your "Risk Appetite." If you can stomach a 10% drawdown without it affecting you, then your Max Dent is 10%. This calculator was built to help you determine your own personal risk per trade. Beyond sizing your risk correctly, it also helps you see whether you're actually profitable over the long run, so you can adjust and address the problem right away instead of mindlessly grinding and "trusting the process." A good rule of thumb: give yourself at least 100 trades before you evaluate the results.
